Euro 2008 England Qualifier -
FYR Macedonia v England - Skopje Travel and Tourist Information
England visit the
Macedonian capital of Skopje for their first away Euro 2008 qualifier. The
game takes place on 6th September 2006. A number of airlines
service Skopjes
Petrovac airport but direct flights to the far-flung Balkan outpost are not
common. Skopje has yet to embrace the true potential of its tourist trade
and flight connections and tourist infrastructure require improvement.
Skopje airport is around 16 miles east of Skopje city centre.
Flying to nearby Thessaloniki may be a
cheaper option. The international airport in Greece
has more flight connections and a train can be taken from the Greek airport
to Skopje. The train will take around 4 hours.
Hotel accommodation in
Skopje is similar
in price and standard to what you would expect in the UK. There are even a
couple of 5 star hotels in Skopje
where prices for a standard double room will cost over £100 a night.
Reasonably priced 3 star accommodation can be found in Skopje where you should
be able to find a double room for around £40 a night.
Skopje is a charming
city with a diverse history and culture. East meets west in the nation that
declared its independence from Yugoslavia
in 1991. Skopje is famous as the birth place of Mother Theresa but her birth
place was all but destroyed in 1963 - disaster struck when Skopje was almost
wiped off the face of the earth by a huge earthquake.
