Klagenfurt is known as the 'Rose of Lake Woerthersee' and is Austria's southern most provincial capital. Klagenfurt is an 800 year old renaissance town and is shrouded in myth and legend. Klagenfurt, it is said, was once haunted by a dragon-like figure known as the 'Lindwurm'. Early settlers killed the beast and Klagenfurt was founded.
Klagenfurt is steeped in culture. The city boasts numerous internationally renowned museums and galleries. Every June, Klagenfurt becomes the European capital of literature when it hosts the annual Ingeborg Bachmann Competition. If you're wondering who Ingeborg Bachmann is, don't worry.
