Euro 2008 Klagenfurt Tourist Information

Klagenfurt is known as the 'Rose of Lake Woerthersee' and is Austria's southern most provincial capital. Klagenfurt is an 800 year old renaissance town and is shrouded in myth and legend. Klagenfurt, it is said, was once haunted by a dragon-like figure known as the 'Lindwurm'. Early settlers killed the beast and Klagenfurt was founded.

Klagenfurt is also steeped in culture. The city boasts numerous internationally renowned museums and galleries. Every June Klagenfurt becomes the European capital of literature when it hosts the annual Ingeborg Bachmann Competition. If you're wondering who Ingeborg Bachmann is, don't worry. There's a football tournament on.

Cheap accommodation in Klagenfurt can be found in one of the city's Youth Hostels. Klagenfurt also offers several campsites with all amenities. There are a range of good hotels in Klagenfurt but book in advance or you will miss out. Alternatively book a holiday home or self contained flat. There is no shortage of this kind of accommodation here.

If you travel to Klagenfurt do not miss the Minimundus - a miniature world on the banks of Lake Woerthersee. Parts of the 26,000 square metre complex have even been turned into desert and tropical rainforest for an extra touch of realism. Some of the models are truly astounding. There is even a model space shuttle that blasts off every hour!
