Euro 2008 Basel/Basle Tourist
Information
The Swiss
city of Basle straddles the border of Switzerland, Germany and France and as
a result, is one of Switzerland's most open cities. Strangely, flights to
Basel don't land in Switzerland. If you fly to Basle you will actually
land in France as the airport here is on French soil - the airport is only 8
miles away however - so if you fly to Basel you can say you've been to two
countries!
A hotel in
Basle can often sting the wallet, particularly during a large trade event.
Booking a hotel in Basle in advance is recommended and for a cheap hotel in
Basle try the city's Old Town district, with it's medieval charm and
convenient proximity to the main shopping and nightlife areas.
Basel is a
major trade and financial centre, famous for modern art and packed with over
40 museums and galleries - That's a lot when you consider the population is
little more than 200,000. The city's architecture is also a point of pride
and tours can be made to take in the old and the stunningly new architecture
of Basle. Basle is the second largest and wealthiest city in Switzerland and
is the country's only outlet to the sea.
