Euro 2008 Salzburg Tourist Information

Salzburg, steeped in history and culture, is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Mozart. Salzburg is a UNESCO protected heritage site and boasts over 100 churches, castles and palaces.

Salzburg has eight 5 star hotels and over 40 4 star hotels. This represents around 50% of the hotel space in Salzburg so do not expect to find a cheap hotel in Salzburg at the last minute. For cheap accommodation in Salzburg there are several campsites that may be easier on the pocket. Salzburg also has several Youth Hostels for the budget traveller.

Flights to Salzburg land at the W.A.Mozart airport (no prizes for guessing who it's named after). The airport is only a 10-15 minute drive from Salzburg. You can also take the train and be at the main station in Salzburg in around 15 minutes. Airlines flying to Salzburg from the UK include Ryanair, FlyBE and British Midland.

Salzburg is of course the city showcased in the smash hit film The Sound of Music. England fans of a certain age and with long memories may remember that this is what was on ITV during the 1982 World Cup 2nd round game against Spain. Millions of fans enjoying the game on BBC watched in disbelief as clown Kevin Keegan missed an open goal late in the second half, condemning England to an early exit from the tournament. There was no alternative but to turn over and be subjected to even greater misery at the hands of Julie Andrews and a bunch of terribly precocious children dressed in curtains.
