Euro 2008 Zurich Tourist
Information
Zurich is
Switzerland's biggest city with a population of 340,000. Zurich is one of
the world's cleanest and safest cities and a well known financial and
insurance centre. Zurich is not all grey and dull however. Zurich's old
town, straddling the Limmat river is clustered with small medieval
buildings, cafés and bistros giving Zurich a more intimate feel.
Zurich has
over 200 hotels but you must book well in advance. Expect prices for Zurich
hotels to rise steeply during Euro 2008. Cheap accommodation in Zurich can
be found in a youth or backpacker hostel but places are few and far between.
Camping in Zurich is possible but there is only one campsite within easy
reach of the city centre. It may be best to look for options outside of
Zurich for cheap accommodation during the European Championships.
Nightlife
in Zurich is actually livelier than one would assume. Long the preserve of
the banking classes, Zurich is waking up and along with the renaissance come
some ultra cool bistro and cocktail bars. Try the Pur Pur Bar behind the
opera house. With low level seating and Asian Mediterranean cuisine it is
the place to be seen - if you can bear the posers and surly staff!
One of the
most famous restaurants in Zurich, if not Switzerland, is the Blindekuh or
'Blind Cow'. All the serving staff are blind and the whole restaurant
is plunged into total darkness. You must be led to your table and order, eat
and converse in pitch blackness. The philosophy is that your other senses
are awakened. Instead of sight, enjoy the heightened senses of smell,
hearing and touch. If you can get a reservation here when in Zurich you are
in for a truly unique dining experience.
