The advent of the FIS Snowboarding World Cup in Solden heralds the introduction of a new ski season in Austria. The country has an abundance of top ski resorts and is one of Europe's most established destinations for winter sports enthusiasts. The region of Tirol is anticipating a record number of visitors for the 2006 winter season. The annual event, which runs from 15-16th October this year attracts thousands of early visitors and marks the beginning of a hectic ski season in Austria.
A ski holiday in Austria offers experienced skiers and snowboarders alike the opportunity to sample what the country has to offer in terms of skiing and, of course, the famous après ski. As well as the aforementioned Solden, the resorts of Kitzbuhel and St Anton are amongst the most popular ski destinations in the area. With some 176 ski schools available in the region, Tirol offers the opportunity to develop embryonic skills for the less experienced skier.
As well as skiing, Tirol offers much for hikers and mountain climbers, with some 710 peaks reaching over 3000 metres in height. Innsbruck is the largest city and administrative centre of the region and is the major port of entry with its' international airport. Innsbruck has much to offer itself as a city break destination and is well worth staying in for a few days before launching yourself on the slopes. Travelling to the slopes from Innsbruck is relatively simple but the most effective and cheapest way to get to the Tirol ski resorts is by hire car. Car hire in Innsbruck is abundant, particularly at the airport itself and allows the ski enthusiast to try out different slopes across the region. Rail transportation to the region from Innsbruck and Zurich are also available, but as a regional service, this does not reach all of the ski resorts throughout Tirol.
If the main focus of your stay is Apres ski as opposed the slopes themselves, the best resort to visit is Solden. This resort is more open to Snowboarders and has a lively night life scene to unwind after a hard day on the slopes.
